Domestic Economy in the Early 1800s.
Words of Wisdom.
“Perhaps few branches of female education are so useful, as great readiness at figures.” And so it continues.
I like this book already.
The Girl took personal finance last year, and I think that was a good thing. We had plenty of dinnertime discussions about finances and financial decisions. To see this same theme extolled in a manuscript from 1819 is affirming.
Other advice? Balancing your checkbook, making a budget, and communicating with your spouse about the finances.
I wonder if this was a revolutionary idea for the day?

I wonder how many women still want the husband to take care of finances, as many did while I was growing up in the 1950s.

No idea – but that’s certainly not what the advice was back in 1819! Heck, I’m lazy, I’ll admit that it would be easier, but … The Lady makes many compelling arguments.
