I kid you not. A diet drink of pumpkin seeds from 1885.
Let’s unpack this:
- Dried pumpkin seeds
- Boiled water
- Used for strangury and kindred complaints
Strangury is kidney or bladder stones – ouch! Check out the full description of Strangury here.

My pleasure! Every once in a while you run across some real gems. What I love is that we have the internet to cross reference what’s in some of these tomes – otherwise there would be no way to interpret them. The language is by and large accessible, but sometimes the references are so obscure.

I’d go for the parsley version, though I think the pain of kidney stones would make it impossible for me to stand up, let alone hold a knife to chop it.

I’m not familiar with the parsley – regardless, though, you’re right!
